The image above is an example of bad horizontal symmetry. While looking at this image the eyes are not following one consistent line of symmetry. The words are drawing the eyes to the insect.
The image above is an example of good horizontal symmetry. The image has several example of horizontal symmetry. One example would be the shadows of the trees and how they meet in the middle of the path making a horizontal shadow. Another example would be the trunks of the trees and how they are evenly distributed across from one another forming a horizontal pattern.
The first image does lack symmetry, but I don't think it's a bad design. Sometimes asymmetrical layouts can add movement to the piece. *Remember that horizontal symmetry is a reflection across a horizontal axis. (kind of like a reflection in water)
